• One Drop •
There is nothing that makes me feel more
infinitely small
than staring out at the open ocean.
To feel the waves touch my feet,
knowing that their power
rendered hard rocks
into soft sand…
To know
that this one ocean
would be nothing
were it not for
every drop of water
that makes her.
What pure magic to stand
solitary on the shoreline,
being reminded that I—
one drop of water—
have an ocean
I belong to
that wouldn’t be
the same without me.

This poem is the first in a series of pieces that were inspired by prompts by the 6th graders of Fort Hunt Elementary School in Virginia. Their prompt was “ocean”.
